1) We conducted a study in the fall of 1999 that demonstrated that cheques in the name of five different companies were deposited into our bank account WITHOUT ANY QUESTIONS from any financial institutions! This leads to the question: who receives the mail - and cheques - in your organisation? As well, a few clients sent us their payment for invoices without signing their cheques. Result: only one cheque on more than ten was stopped . Another question for you: where do you store your blank cheques?

2) Your computers are probably insured, but how much is the data within worth? Our experience shows that the majority of our clients do not insure their data. Even worse, their security copy is stored in proximity to their work area. In the event of a fire, they could lose everything.

3) You probably sign your own cheques but who makes commitments for your firm? It is too late to refuse to pay an invoice when the supplier has a purchase order signed by one of your employees.

4) Studies demonstrate that people we trust commit the majority of thefts and fraud. Unfortunately, this is why they usually succeed in committing fraud for such lengthy periods…
